With a New Year comes new resolutions, goals, plans, and often times, amendments to Labor Laws. 2015 wasn’t the exception! The State of Florida was quick to introduce changes to existing policies and procedures, some of which should’ve been implemented the first of the year.
One of the main changes implemented in the State of Florida that affects both, employers and employees, was the increase of the minimum wage to $8.05 per hour. This change became effective on January 1, and with it, an obligation to update and display new Labor Posters.
Late last year, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) announced changes to the list of industries that are exempt from the requirement to keep OSHA injury and illness records, and to the list of severe work-related injuries and illnesses that covered employers must report. These new requirements went into effect on January 1, 2015 for workplaces under Federal OSHA jurisdiction.
During the State of the Union address, President Obama pointed out several Human Resources issues that could greatly impact businesses in the near future. From changes to the federal minimum wage, equal pay for men women, to changes in the overtime regulation, this year could bring significant amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Acts (FLSA). The FLSA is a very comprehensive policy that addresses the employer’s obligations as it relates to “wage and hour.”
As you continue to develop your organization’s strategic plan for 2015, it is imperative that you monitor and implement, when necessary, new labor laws and regulations. In addition, as your business strategy changes and evolves, so should your internal policies and procedures.
