I’d like to bring your attention to this blog title. Have you ever had an idea that you’ve kept to yourself and soon found that someone else had the same idea and made something of it. How did you feel? Were you discouraged…feeling as though that was your idea and someone took it from you?
It’s important to acknowledge that an IDEA or DREAM is just that until to take action to make it a reality. What I mean is, put it to paper…document it and put a loose plan of action behind it. You don’t have to know all the steps needed to make it a reality…but taking action is always the first step.
As a growth strategist who works with small and medium business owners, I can’t tell you how many DO NOT have a strategic growth plan for their business written down. According to a recent article in Forbes Magazine it was reported that fewer than 20% actually write down and describe their goals on a regular basis. Vividly describing your goals in written form is strongly associated with goal success according to the report. People who very vividly describe or picture their goals are anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals. It stands to reason that as a business owner, in order to successfully maneuver the entrepreneur landscape, a written plan of action is critical to overall success.
You may be wondering how does writing down my vision for my business help me grow my business. Most entrepreneur avoid putting their goals or dreams on paper feeling that it seems like a lot of extra work when it’s already stored in their brain.
There are several things that happen when you write down your dream goals.
- Putting something in writing triggers the need to satisfy the goal. No more hiding behind the possibility…but it suddenly become a reality.
- By putting your dreams out there, they become easier to explain and communicate to others who can contribute to your success.
- It’s easier to apply and track the action steps needed to continue moving the needle forward toward your end goal.
- Finally, by visually putting your dream out there, the universe in return will acknowledge it and attract the resources needed to give it wings.
But there’s another deeper phenomenon happening… encoding. Encoding is the biological process by which the things we perceive travel to our brain’s hippocampus where they’re analyzed. From there, decisions are made about what gets stored in our long-term memory and, in turn, what gets discarded. Writing improves that encoding process. In other words, when you write it down it has a much greater chance of being remembered.
Next time you have this great idea or dream…don’t be afraid to give it wings and take steps to making it a reality. As Zig Zigler said “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great!”
